31, Lombard Street, London, June 4, 1909. I ENCLOSE copy of a telegram received to-day from our Hong Kong office. It does not appear to throw much further light on the subject, but I thought that you would like to see it and to know how the matter is regarded in the Colony. Yours truly,

Telegram received from Hong Kong, June 4, 1900,

"REFERRING to your telegram of 3rd, Peking wires, referring to telegram from London office to Peking agency the 3rd June, we are acting under instructions British With reference to foregoing Minister, will probably initial agreement to-night, telegraph to us urgent, do you authorise us to, with concurrence British Minister, insert clause in terms of our telegram of the 30th May ?"

Re foregoing, we have telegraphed Peking referring to your telegram of the 4th, in view of London office telegram of the 3rd June, with reference to formal intimation to French and German groups that British and Chinese Corporation (Limited) would We cannot understand how British receive exclusive support of Foreign Office Minister can now agree not to insert name of British and Chinese Corporation (Limited); but if British Minister accepts responsibility as regards the position British and Chinese Corporation (Limited) in particular, and as regards position generally as pointed out in London office telegram of yesterday, and seeing that the decision rests with Foreign Office, we leave you to act as you suggest.
